At moment GIMP is working on a 16 BIT new version, but the stable upgrade will be in the next future. This is not influent for my way of work but this is not an insignificant thing and using GIMP you have to consider it. At this point the depth of color is reduced like in a jpg similar situation. But remember tha GIMP does NOT support 16 BIT so your Raf/TFF is reconduced to 8 BIT. It is often an essential feature for many users so it is also a GIMP’s advantage in comparison with Paint. In such a way, Paint.NET is not suitable for many users. I prefer use my internal mac automator batch with a simple routine to convert RAF in Tiff then modify in Gimp (this is possible form +/- 2 weks), or directly using silkypix. However, a great weakness of Paint.NET is limited platforms since, unlike GIMP, it is not available for Mac OS and Linux fans. I'm scared to upgrade 'cos 2.8.4 versus 2.8.2 changes the path of system and I have to move plugin installed and others. So, at moment, I don't know if 2.8.4 supports Xtrans RAF files. license and is available for Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows. The producer of dcraw says about gimp that the dcraw should be boundeled by GIMP devrelopers in the latest version (2.8.4). GIMP is a free and open-source raster graphics editor used for image manipulation. BUT, in the site of DCRAW i see that latest version of that sw supports XE1 (so also Xpro1 i suppose). This is a big advantage for people who use different computers but are collaborating. My version of gimp(with dcraw) with internal support Uraw does' NOT support Raf files of Xpro1. GIMP is cross platform and will run equally well on Linux, Windows and Mac.
I use Gimp2 2.8.2 (over a imac mountain lion latest version10.8.3 ) now the latest version is 2.8.4.ĭcraw is in boundle with Gimp or apart as plugin. It’s a good thing that GIMP is open source so that creators can take this kind of thing into their own hands.

It has a very simple UI which is good for beginners to get started with digital art.
